What to ask before hiring a WordPress developer

Many security problems start as build decisions: a pile of plugins each doing one small job, a theme nobody can update, no staging site, and no record of who has access.

Hiring a WordPress developer is a security decision as much as a design one. The answers in this topic cover what things cost, when a rebuild beats a migration, and how to tell whether the person you are about to hire will leave you exposed.

Ask to see something they built two years ago and still look after. A site that has aged well tells you more than a portfolio shot ever will. Ask who owns the hosting account, where the code lives, and what happens if you decide to move it elsewhere. Good answers to those are short and specific. Vague answers usually mean someone will be paid later to untangle it.
